Bob.O: Oelschlagers from Schwedler
My great-grandfather Casper Oelschlager left Schwedler in 1889 and came to Pittsburgh in the United States. 20 other people from Schwedler later followed him. There is now a large Oelschlager family in the US with origins from Schwedler. I have details that I can share. We lost contact with the Schwedler branch of the family many many years ago.

Bob.O: Re: Oelschlagers from Schwedler
I am the grandson of Franz Ölschläger and Mary Brettschneider, both born in Švedlár. I am a descendant of the Heinz, Theis, Ordelt, Patz, Klein and Eger families of Švedlár; and am related by marriage to the Krieger, Lovi and Schemnitzer families of Švedlár. Here is a brief genealogy of Švedlár immigrants to Pittsburgh, 1889-1905:

Casper Ölschläger, born January 1841 in Švedlár, married in Švedlár in 1870 Dorothea Heinz, born January 6, 1851 in Švedlár. Casper came to Pittsburgh in 1889 and found work in the steel mills; his wife and children followed in 1892.

Michael Brettschneider; born April 6, 1863 in Švedlár, was the son of Jan Brettschneider and Zuzana Ordelt. Michael was a coal miner in Švedlár who followed Casper Ölschläger to Pittsburgh in 1890 and found work in the coal mines. Michael married on November 22, 1886 in Švedlár Marie Theis, born December 15, 1863, daughter of Samuel Theis and Anna Marie Patz. Samuel Theis was the son of Benjamin Theis and Dorota Eger of Švedlár; Samuel Theis married Anna Marie Patz on February 2, 1863. Anna Marie Patz was the daughter of Benjamin Patz and Anna Marie Klein of Švedlár. Marie Theis Brettschneider followed her husband Michael Brettschneider to Pittsburgh in 1892 with their daughter Mary.

Dori Ölschläger, daughter of Casper Ölschläger and Dorothea Heinz, was born in 1876 in Švedlár and came to Pittsburgh in 1892 with her mother. She married on October 7, 1894 in Pittsburgh John Krieger of Švedlár. John Krieger was born in Švedlár on September 5, 1872; the son of Gottfried Krieger and Susannah Lovi. Both John and Gottfried Krieger were coal miners in Švedlár. John Krieger came to Pittsburgh in 1892 and worked first as a coal miner and then later as a teamster driving a beer wagon.

Franz Ölschläger, son of Casper Ölschläger and Dorothea Heinz, was born on April 2, 1878 in Švedlár and came to Pittsburgh in 1892 with his mother. He married in Pittsburgh on February 26, 1905 Mary Brettschneider of Švedlár. Mary Brettschneider was born on February 01, 1888 in Švedlár, daughter of Michael Brettschneider and Marie Theis; and came to Pittsburgh with her mother in 1892. Frank Oelschlager worked in the steel mills.

Dora Theis, sister of Marie Theis and daughter of Samuel Theis and Anna Marie Patz, was born in 1869 in Švedlár. She married in Schwedler in 1891 John Schemnitzer, born in 1865 in Švedlár, where he worked as a coal miner. John Schemnitzer came to Pittsburgh in 1901 and again found work as a coal miner. His wife Dora followed him with their daughter Susan Julia Schemnitzer in 1903.

Charlie Schemnitzer, older brother of John Schemnitzer, was born in Švedlár in 1863 and came to Pittsburgh in 1900. He married in 1905 Rose from Švedlár; I do not know her surname. He was a coal miner in Švedlár and in Pittsburgh.

Two nephews from Švedlár of Dorothea Heinz, Frank Heinz and Mike Heinz, also came to Pittsburgh. They were born in 1880 and 1889 in Švedlár and came to Pittsburgh in 1904 and 1905. Frank Heinz married Emma Scholtz of Švedlár and they ran the Heinz Bakery on Main St. in the town of Washington, Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh.

Frank O: Re: Oelschlagers from Schwedler
Hi,

I am the grandson of Franklin Casper Oelschlager and the sone of Franklin Robert Oelschlager, also of the Pittsburg family line. My great-grandfathers from my paternal grandfather worked in the coal mines and steel mills repsectively.

I actually have the pick-axe used by one great-grandfather in the coal mines and a large "nail" made in the steel mill as well.

It seems to me that we are from the same line.

Hello Frank,

You are the son of my first cousin Franklin Robert Oelschlager, who I knew as "Pepper." His father was my dad's brother.

The "big nail" was not made in the nail mill, it was a party favor at your great-grandfather Frank Oelschlager's 90th birthday party in 1968. I have one also. But I would love to see the pick axe (which was used by Mike Brettschneider).

Please give me a call - I left my number on your work voice mail. I knew your grandparents (my Uncle Frank and Aunt Eoline) quite well.

Hello Lynn,

If your family came to Bridgeville/Upper St. Clair from the German-speaking village of Schwedler in Upper Hungary (now Slovakia), I can share a tremendous amount of directly relevant material. Can you send me the names and (approximate) birth dates of your ancestors born in Schwedler? You can either post the names here or email them to me directly (your sister has my email address).

BOelschl: Re: Oelschlagers from Schwedler
Here is more information on the Schemnitzer families:

JOHN SCHEMNITZER, a coal miner, was born in 1865 in Schwedler. He married DORA THEIS in 1891, sister of Mary Oelschlager’s mother Marie Theis Brettschneider. John Schemnitzer immigrated to the Pittsburgh area in 1901 and his wife and three daughters followed in 1903. They lived on Grannish hill in Broughton right above and behind the Brettschneider farmhouse.
Jean Riggs, granddaughter of John Schemnitzer, writes, “The house on Grannish hill was finished before the girls and their mother came. The story is that the house warming was a really big bash. All of Grannish hill came and danced into the night. There was not much furniture, so there was plenty of room to dance. Lots of music, good food and home brew.” No doubt Frank Oelschlager came to help celebrate and paid considerable attention to young Mary Brettschneider—the housewarming party preceded their wedding by only 18 months.
In his later years, John Schemnitzer left the coal mines and worked for the Broughton township highway department. Children:
i. SUSAN JULIANNA SCHEMNITZER RIGGS, Mary Brettschneider’s oldest cousin and maid of honor, b. February 16, 1893, in Schwedler; came to the US in 1903. She had one daughter:
a. JEAN RIGGS
ii. MOLLIE SCHEMNITZER, b. 1895, in Schwedler.
iii. MARIE SCHEMNITZER, b. 1897, in Schwedler.
iv. ROSE SCHEMNITZER, b. 1904, in Broughton
v. JOHN SCHEMNITZER, a coal miner like his father, b. November 19, 1906, in Broughton, PA; d. February 1978
vi. FRANK SCHEMNITZER, b. April 3, 1908; d. April 1963.
vii. CARL SCHEMNITZER, b. Aft. June, 1910.
CHARLES SCHEMNITZER, brother of John and also a coal miner in Schwedler and in Broughton, was born in 1883. He immigrated in 1900 and married ROSE from Schwedler in 1905; she was born in 1887. The family lived on Grannish Hill in Broughton for many years and later moved about four miles north to Willock. They raised seven children:
i. CHARLES SCHEMNITZER, b. 1906.
ii. LOUIS SCHEMNITZER, b. August 25, 1907, Broughton, PA; d. May 1991, Broughton, PA
iii. CATHERINE SCHEMNITZER, b. 1909.
iv. WILLIAM SCHEMNITZER, b. 1912.
v. IDA SCHEMNITZER, b. 1913.
vi. ROSE SCHEMNITZER, b. 1918.
vii. JACOB SCHEMNITZER, b. 1920. Jacob served in WWII and is listed on Broughton Memorial Honor Roll that also commemorates Johnny Brettschneider’s WWI service and death.

Grohregin: Schwedler Geneology
I am Emery Grohregin of Paso Robles California in the USA. I am very interested in following up on Grohregin ancestory. I have discovered that my great Grandfather, Casper Grohregin was born in Schwedler in February of 1881. He later moved from Schwedler to Pittsburgh and worked in steel mills as many others have described in the late 1800s before raising his family in Pittsburgh. I believe that I have other Grohregin relatives that currently live there. I am interested to learn all that I can of Schwedler, it history and current status.

Thank you in advance,

Schwedler is the German spelling. The Slovak spelling is Švedlár which is how you should look on a modern map or doing a Google search, because the town is located in what is now eastern Slovakia.
You can find a fairly detailed history of Schwedler in the book "The Oelschlagers of Monessen" available on-line at http://www.cafepress.com/bobsbooks/; it includes the story of the expulsion of ethnic Germans from Slovakia after WWII ended.

I have been through the birth records of the Schwedler church books, and while I do not recall the name "Grohregin," the name "Groh" was quite common (as was the first name Casper). If you go to the church books, you may want to look for the 1881 birth record of your great grandfather (which would give you his parents' names) under both surnames. The church books are available on microfilm through the Mormon Family History Libraries. The records for 1881 are quite legible.

If so, I attended high school with him and wanted to get a hold of him to let him know that Hazen High School is planning their 20 year reunion for 2007. I know this is unrelated to the genealogy and I do apologize for that. Genealogy interests me very much and I have quite a bit of information on my own family's history. So again apologize for interfering, I am just trying to find some people that may want to attend the reunion. Thank You very much, Jill Clavero

reese: Re: Oelschlagers from Schwedler
Here is what I have gathered from my elders:

My great-grandmother Pauline Schmögner was born in Svedlar on April 12, 1864, the daughter of Frank Schmögner (a shoemaker) and Katharine (Meckgardi??). She had three sisters and a brother. One brother and sister stayed in Europe, names unknown. One sister married a man named Keill and lived in Brooklyn, NY. Her name might have been Marie or Emma. The other sister might have lived in Philadelphia. Mr. and Mrs. Keill had three sons and two daughters: Fred, Charles, William, Emma, and Anna.

Emma married Casper Oelschlager. Mr. Oelschlager lived in Pittsburgh but traveled to New York City for business. On one of his business trips, he met Emma Keill, and eventually married her and took her to Pittsburgh. In Pittsburgh, Emma and Casper lived with his parents.
Their first baby, a son, was born dead. They also had two daughters, Marie and Emma.

Marie Oelschlager grew up to marry a Mr. Hughes. They had two sons before they got a divorce, she took the sons. She then married a barber named Mr. Davis. Mr. Davis was an older man who had children by a previous marriage. At least one child came of this new marriage, Marie Davis.

Marie Davis had at least one child, a son named Richard. She lives (in 1980) at 3560 Poppy Crescent, Virginia Beach, VA, 23456 — definitely a hot lead.

If you know more, please send an email to reeserick -k-u-k-a-c- msn.com -p-o-n-t-

I can't find a direct link in my data base; but they were clearly part of the same Zipser Sachsen community and shared a common heritage. I have nine different individuals named Fabri or Fabry in my Schwedler database; and 40 or 50 Oelschlagers. Oelschlager is without a doubt a distictly Carpathian German surname; very common in that community and fairly rare in other German communities.

But there were many Zipser Saxon villages in the area.

My grandmother came from Schwedler. Researching her ancestry in the Schwedler church records I found her grandmother was named Sarah Grohregin, and her father Michael Groh or Grohregin. Previous gens. were simply Groh.
Some of the records listed them as "Groh, vulgo Regin", vulgo being Latin for alias. They seem to have combined two names. For an explanation of this, try going to http://www.oxfordjetgenealogy.com/vulgo_names.htm.

On one side Johan Loy b: Germany married Maria Ratzenberger

Franz Gottfried Brettschneider: Re: Oelschlagers from Schwedler
Hello Bob O,
When I was checking the site of Svedlar - where I was born in 1940 - I came across the Radixforum site and was surprise to read so many familiar names.
I am in the possession of a number of original birthcertificates, for instance:
-Michael Brettschneider born 17/09/1829,
his father Kaspar Brettschneider (miner),
his mother Juliana Brettschneider (nee Nemeth), all of them from Svedlar.
As godparents are mentioned Johann Lukesch and Elisabeth Brauer.
- Dorothea Brettschneider born 02/02/1894,
her father Michael Brettschneider (miner)
her mother Maria Brettschneider nee Schmidt, all from Svedlar.
Godparents: Michael and Susanna Groeh
- Franz Kreisel, born 22/12/1892,
his father Michael Kreisel (miner),
his mother Maria Kreisel nee Patz, all from Svedlar.
Godparents: Samuel and Susanna Schlemnitzer.

My own father Franz Brettschneider was born 07/11/1912 out of wedlock, son of Dorothea Brettschneider.
He was raised by the family of Arpad Ordelt in Svedlar.
I was born there 17/10/1940, mother was Paula Brettschneider nee Krieger ,also from Svedlar.
My mother comes from the family of Gottfried and Rosalia Krieger. They were three sisters, one of them, also called Rosalia, married Michael Gastgeb. Another sister Amalia married F. Grohregin (Franz or Ferdinand?). Also everyone from Svedlar.
A brother or sister from my grandmother Rosalia Krieger emigrated to the USA after World War I, destination unknown. I can still remember letters and parcels arriving from the States till roundabout 1955.
Concluding: I would be interested to know if you see any connections to the families and familymembers you mentioned in the States, and if maybe we could be related in some way? Or know anyone else who has information and/ or interest?
I lived in the Czech Republic until 1968,working in the uraniummines. Then I went to live in Germany. Since 1990 I have been living in the Netherlands ,with my Dutch wife.
All the best, Franz Gottfried Brettschneider.

Hi, I saw your message and we may be researching the same
family. I have in my family tree a Susanna Groh, which I
believe is the short version of the name, she married
Caspar Ratzenberger who was b:19 Jan.1840 in Svedlar, Gelnica, Kosice, Slovakia. Susanna Groh was b:25 Sep.1843
in the same place. If I am correct, they had 4 children,
Susanna 1869, Caspar 1871, Martin 1873, & Maria 1878.
Do any of these names match any of yours? Susanna & Carpar were married 29 Jun. 1868 in Svedlar. Susanna Groh's parents were Johan Groh b:1813 and Anna Maria Patz b: 1821.
hope to hear from you soon. betsy

The names you are looking for - families Groh and Patz - also appear in my documents from Svedlar. However they are probably not relations ( I am not sure!) but appear only as godparents.
Does anyone know otherwise i.e. any family connections between these families and the Brettschneiders??

betsy: Re: Oelschlagers from Schwedler
Dear Bob,
you seem to have a lot of info. on the families I am researching so I am sure you can help me. I am doing this family research for my daughter's husband and I read what you have on Oelschlager, but I am now confused. I have the following info which is probably wrong:
Johan Oelschlager b:abt.1797 Svedlar D: 27 Dec. 1863 in
Svedlar. He married Anna Maria Patz. She was born bef.
1805 in Svedlar. They had a son also named Johan
Oelschlager b: 24 Oct. 1824 in Svedlar and he married
Juliana Fabry b: 21 Jan. 1829 Svedlar. Juliana Fabry is
the daughter of Juliana Ratzenberger & Martin Fabry, their
other children are: Gottfried Fabry b: 1832 died at age
one year, Anna Maria Fabry b:28 Oct 1834 Svedlar and
died 15 Dec.1904, she married Franz Oelschlager on 12 June 1853 in Svedlar. Franz was b:10 Aug.1828 Svedlar. The
parents of Franz Oelschlager were: Franz Oelschlager & Anna
Maria Klein 1771-1846. The older Franz b:21 Jul.1797 Svedlar
I have him as married also to Anna Maria Pratz on 15 June 1823 in Svedlar b:abt 1801 and she was also married to
a Mr. Schneider. Can you tell me if any of this is correct?
I am also researching the families of Loy, Ratzenberger,Schnoper, Schmeltzer. I have the parents of Anna Chnoper as: Franz Schnoper & Juditha Schmeltzer and the
parents of Johann Ratzenberger as: Michael Ratzenberger
b:1761 Svedlar & Anna Maria Groh b:1781 Svedlar. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely, betsy

reese: Re: Oelschlagers from Schwedler
Betsy,

<< Johan Oelschlager b:abt.1797 Svedlar D: 27 Dec. 1863 in Svedlar. >>

See LDS tape 1791952, item 3. Johan died on that date, at the age of 66 years, 6 months. This would put his birth at about June 1797. His spouse was Anna Maria Patz.

Also in these death records are Johan Oelschlager, the husband of Sara Patz, died on 11 Sep 1847 at 48 (abt 1799). Keep reading for more info on Anna Maria vs. Sara.

<< He married Anna Maria Patz. >>

See above. She is listed as his spouse in his death entry.

There may be conflicting information at 1791952, item 2. On 12 July 1836, Johan Oelschlager, 38, married Sara Patz, 22. Since his parents names are not listed, this is likely his second marriage. Her parents were Caspar Patz and Sara Patz.

In 1791951, item 2, there is a birth record for Sara Patz on 12 Feb 1815. She was the daughter of Caspar Patz and Sara Patz. If this Sara married Johan in 1836, she would have been 21 years, 5 months.

<< She was born bef. 1805 in Svedlar. >>

In 1791952, item 3, there is a death record for Sara Patz on 3 Mar 1857, at age 42 (birth close to 1815). Her husband's was Johan Oelschlager.

In 1791951, item 2, we find the following children.
1822-09-08 Oelschlager, Anna Maria (F: Johan, M: Anna Maria Patz)
1824-10-24 Oelschlager, Johan (F: Johan, M: Anna Maria Patz)
1827-06-17 Oelschlager, Gottfried (F: Johan, M: Anna Maria Patz)
1830-07-11 Oelschlager, Anton (F: Johan, M: Anna Maria Patz)
1833-12-12 Oelschlager, Susanna (F: Johan, M: Anna Maria Patz)
1837-04-09 Oelschlager, Franz (F: Johan, M: Anna Maria Patz)
1839-10-06 Oelschlager, Sara (F: Johan, M: Anna Maria Patz)

1840-02-19 Oelschlager, Samuel (F: Johan, M: Sara Patz)
1844-06-14 Oelschlager, Sara (F: Johan, M: Sara Patz)

The different mothers do not correspond to an 1836 marriage date for Johan and Sara. There is definitely conflicting information here.

In this era, there were not a broad range of common names in use. In the 1800s, there were fewer than 300 homes in Svedlar, but there were Johan Oelschlagers married to Julianna Fabry, Clara Fleisher, Anna Maria Krasz, Theresia Lang, Dorothea Liptay, Julianna Matyas, Rebecca Muller, Anna Maria Patz, Sara Patz, Dorothea Pirkling, Anna Maria Schemnitzer, Sophia Schmogner, and Catharina Zollder.

Not every family record was recorded in the church book. Also, there were a number of mining hamlets in the region, and people moved from place to place to find work.

<< They had a son also named Johan Oelschlager b: 24 Oct. 1824 in Svedlar and he married Juliana Fabry b: 21 Jan. 1829 Svedlar. Juliana Fabry is the daughter of Juliana Ratzenberger & Martin Fabry, their other children are: Gottfried Fabry b: 1832 died at age one year, Anna Maria Fabry b:28 Oct 1834 Svedlar and died 15 Dec.1904>>

Johan's birth on 24 Oct 1824 is noted in the above list of births.

In 1791952, item 2, there is a marriage on 28 Feb 1846 of Johan Oelschlager, 23 (abt 1823) and Juliana Fabry, 18 (abt 1828). His parents were Johan Oelschlager and Anna Maria Patz. Her parents were Martin Fabry and Julianna Ratzenberger.

In 1791951, item 2, I noted three children born to Martin and Julianna:
1829-01-21 Fabry, Julianna
1832-01-10 Fabry, Gottfried
1834-10-28 Fabry, Anna Maria (death on 15 Dec 1904 noted on birth entry).

In 1791952, item 3, there are three death notices:
Gottfried Fabry, on 8 Apr 1833, son of Martin and Julianna.
Sara Fabry, on 18 Nov 1839, at 2 1/2 years, daughter of Martin and Julianna.
Julianna Ratzenberger, wife of Martin Fabry, on 1 Mar 1878, age 72 (abt 1806).

<< Anna Maria Fabry married Franz Oelschlager on 12 June 1853 in Svedlar. >>

Yes, this is noted in 1791952, item 2. He was 23, she was 18. His parents were Franz Oelschlager and Anna Maria Patzier. Her parents were Martin Fabry and Julianna Ratzenberger.

<< Franz was b:10 Aug.1828 Svedlar. The parents of Franz Oelschlager were: Franz Oelschlager & Anna Maria Klein 1771-1846. The older Franz b:21 Jul.1797 Svedlar >>

In 1791951, item 2 are the following children for Franz Oelschlager and Anna Maria Patzier:
1824-12-16 Oelschlager, Franz
1827-01-15 Oelschlager, Anna Maria
1828-08-10 Oelschlager, Franz
1830-12-12 Oelschlager, Dorothea
1833-03-02 Oelschlager, Anna Maria

<< I have him as married also to Anna Maria Pratz on 15 June 1823 in Svedlar b:abt 1801 and she was also married to a Mr. Schneider. >>

In 1791951, item 3 there is record of a marriage on 15 Jun 1823 of Franz Olschlager, 26 and Anna Maria Patz, 22. His parents were Franz Oelschlager and Anna Maria Klein. Her parents were Mathias Patz and Dorothea Muller.

<< I am also researching the families of Loy, Ratzenberger,Schnoper, Schmeltzer. I have the parents of Anna Chnoper as: Franz Schnoper & Juditha Schmeltzer and the parents of Johann Ratzenberger as: Michael Ratzenberger b:1761 Svedlar & Anna Maria Groh b:1781 Svedlar. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. >>

In 1791951, item 3 there is a marriage record on 28 Mar 1801 of Michael Ratzenberger, 40, and Anna Maria Groh, 20. His parents were Michael Ratzenberger and Sophia Zimmermann. Her parents were Martin Groh and Charitate (?) Sohlman.

Take care,
