heart attack and died Oct. 26, 1940. She married Joseph Wolkensdorfer in
February of 1948 and he died in August of 1954. Mary died May 22, 1964 at an
age of 79.

Notes for ANDREW LEITNER:
Lived on the land homesteaded by Josef Leitner until 1939 when they moved
into Herndon. Andrew suffered a heart attack and died Oct. 26, 1940 at the
age of 70 years.
He came to America with his parents in 1882 and settled in Cleveland, Ohio
where they lived for three years. They moved to Rawlins County in 1885 and
settled on a farm four miles south of Herndon, living there until 1939, when

Notes for EUGENE FRANCIS LEITNER:
Eugene bas born on Aug. 25, 1930. Attended both the Atwood Grade School and
High School where he graduated in May of 1948. Gene was known as a hard
worker and an athlete in his youth. When in grade school he delivered
laundry that his mother washted and ironed for others, in his little red
wagon. During his junior high and high school years, Gene worked for Glen
and Ambrose Williams at Williams Grocery. He helped move the store from the
old site, 116 south 4th, now the site of the Buffalo Restaurant, to the
building on the northeast corner of 4th and Main. He also worked during
these years for Jesse Ely at the Foster Lumber Co., site of the new Midwest
Energy building and for Harry Kogl, his uncle and for Dan Skolout on their
farms. Gene lettered his four years in high school in football and track and
three years in basketball. He married Mary Kathryn Prideaux on Sept. 2, 1948
at Sacred Heart Church in Atwood by Father Camillus Schmidt O.F.M. Cap.
Gene was employed at At-Kans Supply, Skelly Oil Co. (now Atwood Coop
Station), Atwood Equity Exchange, Jim McFee's farm, Jim Bowles' Atwood
Implement Co. (site of Bell & Carlson, Inc. at 604 North 4th) before going
to work for his dad, Carl Leitner at Leitner Farm Supply in 1956. In 1961
Carl had a near fatal pickup accident while on his way to Stratton, Nebraska
and he semi-retired. Gene stayed to manage the store when Carl fully retired
in 1968. Gene and Mary Leitner bought his father's business, Leitner Farm
Supply, in January of 1977.
Gene and Mary have always had cattle since they were married in 1948. For
their wedding gift, Mary's parents gave them their first cow. This one cow
was added to and they continued to rent pastures and raise cattle besides
operating the farm supply store. This took care of their weekends and
evenings and gave their children some farm fun. In 1976 they bought 600
acres of farm and pasture land from Wayne and Flo Latimer on the South
Beaver Creek, southwest of Atwood.
Gene and Mary are active in the community and church. Gene served as Grand
Knight of Knights of Columbus 3033 and srved on Sacred Heart Curch Parish
Council for 16 years. He was on Sacred Heart's school board and is a 3rd and
4th degree knight. When the rural fire department in Rawlins County was
organized, about 1968, Gene was one of the first rural firefighters. Gene
played town team baseball in its "heyday" during the 1950's. He played for
coaches Ralph Howland and Irven Hayden Jr.. mary belongs to Sacred Heart's
Christian Mother's Altar Society and was a group leader, Vice-President, and
President of that Society. She also served on the church council. Mary was a
girl scout leader and a cub scout den mother. She helped with two differnt
"teen centers" in Atwood. One was located where Farmers Bank & Trust's south
addition is now, and the Western Auto building. The other was located in the
Preader building, at 504 State. Gene is now a reader at Sacred Heart Church
and serves as Eucharistic Minister. Mary was a CCD(religious education)
teacher, teaching the seniors from 1978-1993. Gene helped with this post
until 1980.
Gene suffered a heart attack on June 7, 1980 and had by-pass surgery in the
spring of 1981 in Colorado Springs, Colorado and is back working full time.
Mary suffered a broken neck June 18, 1986 in a car accident in Colorado
Springs, Colorado and has recovered.
Notes for MARY KATHRYN PRIDEAUX:
Mary Kathryn Prideaux Leitner was born Feb. 1, 1931 the youngest and fourth
child of Henry and Bertha Threlkel Prideaux. Mary was born 17 miles south of
Atwood on the Wayne Kuntz farm on the Middle Sappa Creek, site of famous
Cheyenne Indian battle ground of April 23, 1875. Mary has one brother and
two sisters. Mary is a lifelong resident of Rawlins County and attended both
Atwood Grade School and Atwood High School. She was in the class of 1949,
but graduated from Colby Community College with a G.E.D. in 1969 and
attended art classes there in 1969 and 1970. She married Eugene F. Leitner
on Sept. 2, 1948 at Sacred Heart Church in Atwood by father Camillus Schmidt
O.F.M. Cap.. Mary took instructions and joined that church in December 1948.
Mary belongs to Sacred Heart's Christian Mother's Altar Society and was a
