Without guaranties! I believe Pavity is an other Hungarian version of Pavics, of the slavic, possible Serbo-Croatian Pavič. -ič meaning son of, and the root Pav possible means peacock or peafowl, same as the Hungarian Páva.

Pav: Re: Pavity
Thank you for your information."Son of a peacock"-I must grin! The father of my grandfather immigrated a long time ago from Bosnia-Herzegowina to Germany. His surname was Pavic. In Germany he changed his name into Pavity and told everybody, that he was from Hungary.I never was able to ask him why he did so, because he died a long time before I was born. Is it normal, that people from Bosnia want to be hungarian people?

You're welcome.
Now, that you mentioned Herzegovina, there could be an other angle. Again, I don't speak Serbo-Croatian, just talking on observations. So, don't know the reason behind it, just noticed, that many Bunjevac/Bunyevac name ends with -ity, instead of the more common -ic, -vic. This proud, hard working, honest, R.Cath. people came to Hungary roughly 300 years ago from Herzegovina. Perhaps your g.grandfather had some connection or family lore to them and went for the more traditional name ending (?), opposite the failed south-slav unification attempts. Also, after the turkish occupation, for a period Bosnia-Herzegovina was part of the A-H monarchy, so it wasn't a far away forgotten place.
Hopefuly somebody can add to or correct all of this, and congratulation for your interest.
Joseph, from California.
p.s. perhaps the Bunyevac Index Forum can help also: http://forum.index.hu/Article/showArticle?t=9055848&la=61167422

Claudia from Germany: Re: Pavity
Thanx again for your information.I googled about the bunjevac-croatics and found a site in german.Maybe my ggrandfather belonged to that small volk? I know, that he was r.catholic.He must have been proud, because he never wanted to get a german passport. His language was serbo-croatic.I read that many of the bunjevac-croatics were aristrocrates. Now,I understand why my father tried to find out,if we have aristrocratic roots.I asked a hungarian man in germany,if he knows my birth name "Pavity" and he said "no,never heard that name". Obviously the bunjevacs are a small volk and their names must be very rare. In germany only a very few people wear the name Pavity and these people belong all to my family.Pavic is pretty often here.We have many emmigrates from yougoslavia here.Thanx for the bunjevac forum link,I will check that forum soon. Are you an immigrant from hungary or an expert for hungarian history? Greetings from Germany
