Zlatica : Re: Pocza
Sounds like he was born in Vas megye / county.
The old 1910 Hungarian megye map is at:
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910 but you still need a name of a village.

Start your search with checking out the 31 POCZAs that passed thru Ellis Island. There is a Ferencz from Felsomustu/ Felsomestu ?

The Hungarian phone site is listing the name POCZA.
www.matav.hu/tudakozo

www.rat.de/kuijsten/navigator
Was your ancestor naturalized citizen or had social security numbers? If yes, that those records would give more information.
http://ssdi.rootsweb.com

The LDS-Mormons (Family History Center) have filmed the church records but you need to know the name of a village and religious orientation of your ancestor to order the filmes, from which you can gather ancestral information.

Brenda Pocza: Re: Pocza
none of what you have mentioned has been any help. thanks for the input and help. how is the Pocza phone book help with my search?
Ferencz from Felsomustu thru ellis island is my ggrand father. that is all i know about him and i cant find any more info on him, so i am trying to track down his town, my father has him in the town i listed. but that did not come from a reliable source. one of his daughters is still living and she doesnt know anything about him. so i need to find the village and religious orientation to get church records? are these his records of when he was born/christened ect? or just records from when he came here to the USA.
Nothing i have has his parents or accurate birth place on it. :(

Zlatica : Re: Pocza
Hi

There is a village named Vasmegyer which is in Szabolcs megye and in Hungary.
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910 click on Szabolcs.
www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm (mapquest)

His EI manifest does have numbers by his name meaning that he either applied for his first papers or was naturalized citizen. Worth to check it out.
I am to presume that he did not have social security numbers. What about census?
If he got married in USA well then the church he got married in should have some kind of records.

The LDS-Mormons (Family History Center) are listing Reformed church records from Vasmegyer from 1778 -1895.

The Hungarian phone book at least tells you that the name still exists and you could have some distant relatives over there.

Brenda: Re: Pocza
Wow! i have not had such a response in so quick a time before.
Thank you so much, some of the easiest records are overlooked sometimes.
I do not have his marriage license. I will begin searching for that. thanks for the reminder to look for it.

his Birth places are listed as vasmegyer(my aunt), felsomustu(EI manifest) and Magyarorszag(1930 census) are these places even remotely close to each other?
I could never find him having a SS#
I never knew what the numbers were on the ship manifest either.
Thank you so much for the loads of help, it is much appreciated.
I will begin the marriage search now.

Zlatica : Re: Pocza
Your welcome.

Well we know that Vasmegyer is a town in Szabolcs megye in Hungary. I do not see a town starting with Felso in the area of Vasmegyer.
The word Magyarorszag is a word used in Hungary for Hungary.

Somehow I feel that Felsomustu is a mistake. Several of the POCZAs and even POCAs were from Csepreg. A bit unusual that only one Pocza was from Felsomustu.

I have one suggestion and it would not cost much. Take a chance and order the Vasmegyer church records and see if your family name shows up in those films.

Radix: Re: Pocza
Hello Brenda and Zlatica,

I've looked at the ship manifest and the place associated with Ferenc Pocza appears twice on it. The one in the "Place of birth" column (on the right of the manifest) is easier to read. Using the Hungarian telephone directory you can find a number of Pocza-s from Hungary's Vas County.

The English version of the telephone directory is now here: http://tudakozo.matav.hu/matavonline_en , the Hungarian one is here: http://tudakozo.matav.hu/ . The Hungarian offers more filtering and display options. Use the form in the middle column: enter "Pocza" into the "Név:" field, enter "Vas" into the "Megye:" field, and 100 in the bottom to the "Max. találat" field. Hit "keresés", and you will see Poczas in Hungary's Vas County.

You will see a couple of people living in Mesteri. This is your grandpa's place of birth! At those times there were two Mesteri-s: Alsó-Mesteri (Lower Mesteri) and Felső-Mesteri (Upper Mesteri): http://www.radixindex.com/cgi-bin/hn1913.cgi?place=mester , then they merged.

Hope this helps.

Janos Bogardi / Radix.

Zlatica : Re: Pocza
Hello Mr. Bogardi,

It helps tremendously. Thank you for finding the correct town for Brenda and me. The spelling of the town's name, Felso(mustu)/Felso(mesto) thru me off the right track. I use and appreciate very much knowing about your Bogardi/Radix website.
