Barbara: Pollak in BakonySztLaszlo
I am interested to hear anything concerning the POLLAK family of Bakony Szt.Laszlo. My GreatGrandfather, Charles (?) was a game warden. He died (circa 1892), leaving his widow, Mary (nee Schwartz) (born 1863) and children: Michael (born 1885), Charles (born 1883), Theresa, Mary (born 1889), Joseph, Josephine and Catherine.
Mary Schwartz Pollak left Hungary with her children, and eventually settled in Garfield, New Jersey.
I have reached a dead end in my research here. If anyone can help me, or tell me how to get information from the late 1800's from Hungary, I would be eternally grateful.
Thank you.

The old 1910 Hungarian megye map is at :
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910 click on Veszprem megye

The LDS-Mormons (Family History Center) website is listing church films for/from Bakonyszentlaszlo so check out which one you need, order and gather ancestral information.

Hungary's phone site is at :

Hello Hans!
Is your family from Hungary? Where in Germany are you?
My greatgrandmother's maiden name was Schwartz....not a typical Hungarian name. Her mother's maiden name may have been Mueller.
Email me at Midnite320 -k-u-k-a-c- aol -p-o-n-t- com and we'll compare ancestors.

fpollak: Pollak in Baja
Hello,

I am looking for any kind of information about the ascendance of Bernhard Pollak who was a timber-merchant from Baja, Hungary. He probably got married in Hungary with Amalia Wahrmann and he deceased in 1891,Nov 8, in Vienna, Austria, in the age of 74 years.

Thanks for your help.

Math: Re: Pollak in BakonySztLaszlo
I think you should try the jewish geneology, they have very good records. The name sounds jewish. The Schwartz name at least.
Is it possible to spell the name Polák, instead of Pollak?
If yes, i can give you another tip. Look for the Polák Sándor family in Iváncsa, Hungary.

Bernhard Pollak and Amalia Wahrmann were jewish (they are burried in the old Jewish department of Vienna Central Cemetery). Do you know a good internet adress for jewish genealogy in Hungary? As for the name, any spelling may be correct for th ancestors but the spelling that can be read on the tomb is "Pollak"...
Thanks for your help

Midnite320: Re: Pollak in BakonySztLaszlo
Yes, of course it can be spelled Polak. Also Pollack, Pollock, and I'm sure there are others.
I've tried the Jewish sites, and haven't found any of my family.
In 1975 I visited Poland and went to Auschwitz. In the room with all the suitcases of the victims, I saw two, both with "Pollak" painted on them. Very very sad.

Two of my grand oncles died in Auschwitz: Robert Alexandre Pollak (14/04/1942) and Armand Pierre Pollak (15/04/1942 in Birkenau). It might have been their suitcases you saw...

fpollak: Re: Pollak in Baja
All I know about Bernhard Pollak is that he was a timber-merchant from Baja, Hungary. He probably got married in Hungary with Amalia Wahrmann and he deceased in 1891,Nov 8, in Vienna, Austria, in the age of 74 years. He, therefore probably was born in 1817... His wife deceased in 1905, Oct 16, she was 74 years old and was born in Budapest...

Thank you very much for your help. Any clue about their ascendants or any further information about their descendants will be more than wellcomed.

You can find all my informations about my family on my website http://gw.geneanet.org/index.php3?b=fpollak&lang=fr;p=bernhard;n=pollak

Ira Pollack: Pollaks from Hungary
I came across this forum accidentally.
My father, Max Pollack, was from Budapest or some small enclave near Budapest. He was born about 1893.
I found his name in a ship manifest at the Ellis Island site. His name was spelled "Pollak" at that time. I don't know how, when or why he changed the spelling.
Max was one of 8 or 9 children (or so I'm told). He claimed his father was a lumberjack.
Some other members of his family that I knew (all deceased, including Max) spelled their name Pollak. I only knew Max's brother David.

fpollak: Re: Pollak in Baja
Hello,

I went to Vienna last week-end and found the tomb of my ancestors where their birth dates were written: Bernhard Pollak was born the 25th of July 1818 (Baja) and Amalia Wahrmann the 12th of december 1830 (Budapest).

Do you think these further informations will allow me to find out any information about their parents?

Thanks for your help.

chicco: Re: Pollak in Baja
yes, you will find with the date of death the last adress in the Vienna Stadtarchiv post -k-u-k-a-c- m08.magwien.gv -p-o-n-t- at
you ask for the "Todesfallsaufnahme" and for the "Meldenachweis" on this papers you get information why this people died, and the next ancestors. Also where they leaved in Vienna
by IKG w.eckstein -k-u-k-a-c- ikg-wien -p-o-n-t- at you ask for the marriage certificate, with birth and death date, place, and if they married in Vienna, you find also the parents
