reese: Schmögner family of Svedlar
Here is what I have gathered from my elders:

My great-grandmother Pauline Schmögner was born in Svedlar on April 12, 1864, the daughter of Frank Schmögner (a shoemaker) and Katharine (Meckgardi??). She had three sisters and a brother. One brother and sister stayed in Europe, names unknown. One sister married a man named Keill and lived in Brooklyn, NY. Her name might have been Marie or Emma. The other sister might have lived in Philadelphia. Mr. and Mrs. Keill had three sons and two daughters: Fred, Charles, William, Emma, and Anna.

Emma married Casper Oelschlager. Mr. Oelschlager lived in Pittsburgh but traveled to New York City for business. On one of his business trips, he met Emma Keill, and eventually married her and took her to Pittsburgh. In Pittsburgh, Emma and Casper lived with his parents.
Their first baby, a son, was born dead. They also had two daughters, Marie and Emma.

Marie Oelschlager grew up to marry a Mr. Hughes. They had two sons before they got a divorce, she took the sons. She then married a barber named Mr. Davis. Mr. Davis was an older man who had children by a previous marriage. At least one child came of this new marriage, Marie Davis.

Marie Davis had at least one child, a son named Richard. She lives (in 1980) at 3560 Poppy Crescent, Virginia Beach, VA, 23456 — definitely a hot lead.

SCHMOGNER, SCHMOGNEROVA (OVA a female ending) and S^MOGNER in Slovak Republic's phone book.
www.zoznamst.sk
Check on www.geoportal.sk/roep/index.php for the surnames. No genealogical benefit.
Can not figure out what the surname MECKGARDI correctly might be.
Have you checked out Svedlar's church records that list in LDS-Mormons site?

Wilhelm OELSCHLAGER arr. in 1911 thru Ellis Island, last residence transcribed as Loedler and it is Svedler 95 (house number) Szepes Hung.
Mary SCHMOGNER arr. in 1911 thru EI, last residence Svedler
The early manifests, lets say 1895 do not provide a place of birth or residence.
You might take a look at SCHMOEGNERs manifests.
Use Gold form www.stevemorse.org to find people that arrived from Svedler. You will find a variety of (mis)spellings of your ancestral surnames. Look also for Svedlar/Swedler/Suedla/Sredler/Sredlar/Snedler/Lvedler/

Zlatica,

Thank you!

Yes, I've been spending a lot of time with the Mormon records, and I'm finding people.

As for Meckgardi, see the attached picture. It's the mother's maiden name.

I also found some passenger list info, thanks to your help.

Thanks again!

Rick

Your welcome Rick

Somehow MECKGARDI does not strike me as being correct. It does sort of look like that on the document. Possible that there was such a surname and no longer exist but still I thought there should be something.

Zlatica,

I'll be ordering the church records for Svedlar soon. Hopefully the Meckgardi mystery will be solved. Today I saw a name starting with Al that looked a lot like the M in Meckgardi.

My relative did not write the name you saw. It was written by an official, and her English speaking was probably very hard to understand, since she was a recent immigrant.

Take care,

Rick

Lets hope the church records will give you the surname. I have been looking it at from close and far away and not sure what it starts with. ?e(d)gar(z)d(w). Makes no sense. Could it start with NE?

Zlatica,

As to the mysterious name, the mystery is solved. I received very clear microtapes of the church books, with excellent handwriting. The name is actually Matyasch (in six different records).

Last week, I also figured out that "Yarumpha" is actually Teresia. I saw this name dozens of times, but could never figure it out. I've created a spreadsheet database of family data, and I was able to cross-reference patterns in names. Old German handwriting is quite different from how we do it today!

Take care,

Rick

My ancestors were Ferenc(born about 1830) & Maria(Fabri)Oelschlager of Ungvar, Hungary(now Uzgorod, Ukraine). I recently found a Martin Oelschlager from Ungvar, born 1864, who emigrated in 1887 and was of Pittsburgh PA in 1900(census). Does anyone know anything about this Martin?
