| rdelrosa: Does anyone know? | I am researching my great-grandparents Martin Sleziak and Maria Polc.
Martin Sleziak (Jr.) was born on October 3, 1904 in Dobra niva. His parents were Martin Sleziak (Sr.) (born: Austria/Hungary November 13, 1880) and Anna Svarc (born: Austria/Hungary 1884). Martin (Sr.) had an older brother named Jan (John) Sleziak and a sister. Martin (Jr.) first came to America in 1905 through New York with his mother. They traveled from Breman, Germany to Ilasco (Hannibal), Missouri where his father was. His siblings were George (born: Missouri April 11, 1913), Steven (born: Missouri 1909), and Anna (born: Missouri 1911). In 1930, they lived in Gary City, Indiana.
Martin (Sr.) and Anna Svarc died in Gary, Indiana. Although the dates of their deaths are unknown, the story of their deaths was that Martin (Sr.) died as a result of a massive heart attack while he was ringing the church bell of the Lutheran church he attended and that Anna died a time later.
Maria was born April 11, 1909 in Dobra niva. Her parents were Martin Polc (b. Hungary September 14, 1884 d. October 30, 1960) and Anna Cingota (may also be spelled Cinkota, Czingota, Czinkota; b. Hungary April 19, 1885 d. February 4, 1959). Her parents married on November 24, 1904 in the Lutheran church of Dobra niva and her sisters were Zuzana and Anna. Maria and Martin (Jr.) married on January 4, 1926 at the Lutheran Church in Dobra niva (the marriage was witnessed by Stephan Balko and Stephan Cingota). They arrived in America on July 19, 1928 at New York. They traveled from Cherbourg, France with their daughter, Zuzana (my grandmother; born: Dobra niva October 2, 1926). In America, Maria was known as Mary and their daughter Zuzana as Susan. Their other daughter, Mary was born April 20 1929 in Pennsylvania. In 1930, they lived in Hamtramck, Wayne, Michigan.
Between 1930 and 1934, they settled in a part of Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania known as Parnassus or Kinlock where Martin (Jr.) worked as a coal miner.
Martin (Jr.) died in 1934. The story of his death was that he was down in the coal mine checking the tracks in which the coal cars run and another man (who this man was, is unknown) came to work drunk and pushed the coal car down into the mine without taking any safety measures and injured Martin and he died as a result of those injuries.
After Martin’s (Jr.) death a Paul Balko came to live with Maria and her daughters as a boarder to help around the house.
Maria died in 1999 in Pennsylvania.
Maria’s family remained in Slovakia. She corresponded with a Maria Kapustikova (at Dobra niva 393 Zvolen 96261), Anna Kristofova (at Dobra niva c 241 Zvolen 96261), Anna Yergova (maybe also spelled Jergova or Jerkova) (at Dobra niva c 174 Okres. Zvolen Ceskoslovensk), a Balko family (at 334 or 534 East Spruce Street Olyphant, PA 18448) and a Mr. & Mrs. Andy Tretiak (at P.O. Box 242 Timis Kaming, Que., Canada)which may be relatives or close friends.
She also corresponded with her father Martin Polc, and her sisters, Anna Polc Krkosova (at Dobra niva 264 Okr. Zvolen Cslovenska), and Zuzana Polc Kolenyova (at Dobra nvia 436-80 Zvolen 96261).
