| bfernand: Searching My Ancestors From Nyiradony | Kedves,
My name is Brian Fernandes and I live in the United States. I am a descendent of the Terdiks from Nyiradony, Hungary, and I am researching my family history. More specifically, the informal family name is Csikar Terdik. Unfortunately, I do not speak Hungarian so it is difficult for me to communicate with many of the people I have met in my search.
My great-grandfather Laszlo Terdik (born 1879) left Nyiradony in the early 1900s, though I do not know what year. He traveled back and forth between Hungary and Coatesville, Pennsylvania, here in the U.S. for a while. Eventually his wife Maria Kujbush Terdik (born 1884) and two of their children joined him in Coatesville in December, 1922. At the time, Laszlo and Maria actually had three children. The oldest, Laszlo, first went to Toronto, Canada, with other relatives (Illis Terdik and family), then snuck into the United States later but was caught and deported back to Hungary. Eventually, he made his way to South America. He had four children, all of whom stayed in Hungary. His daughter, Illona, lives in Debrecen. She and I have written to each other several times. She has three children, Bela, Illona, and Csaba. His three other children were: Maria Terdik, who married Bela Bugy and had two children, Mihaly and Julia; Laszlo Terdik, who’s wife I don’t know but who had four children, Julia, Maria, Piroska, and Katalin; and Anna Terdik, who married Mihaly Ples and had four children, Maria, Eva, Laszlo, and Mihaly.
Laszlo and Maria’s second oldest son was Gyorgy, who was my grandfather (mother’s father). He was born in 1910 and baptized at the (Catholic) Church of Nyiradony. The third son was Mihaly, born in 1912. Once they reached the United States, they never returned to Hungary.
It is worth telling you that the Terdiks who settled in Toronto, Canada, went by the name Terdik, while the Terdiks who came to Coatesville went by Ferdik. However, I know for certain that my family’s real name is Terdik. All of the Terdiks (Ferdiks) who came to Coatesville have since died, although their children and grandchildren are still living in the area. I believe there are still one or two relatives who went to Canada that are still living.
Laszlo and Maria were married in May, 1902. Their parents also lived in Nyiradony, and to the best of my knowledge never left Hungary. Laszlo’s parents were Mihaly Terdik and Anna Vas. From a wedding certificate I know that Mihaly died prior to 1902. Maria’s parents were Janos Kujbush and Flora Szilagyi. Both were alive as of 1902. All of these people were members of the Catholic Church of Nyiradony. Laszlo and Maria eventually had two more children here in the U.S., Anne Ferdik Illes and John Ferdik. Also, Maria had three sisters, one of whom was named Julia Kujbush Cegna.
I have spoken with several people with the last name Terdik by way of the internet over the last year. Unfortunately, none of them were relatives.
