chilischew

I am sure you know the history of Austria-Hungary up to 1918. www.progenealogists.com/hungary/maps.htm
23 TRABALKAs came thru Ellis Island to America.
www.ellisislandrecords.org Is your Joseph among them? You need to locate a precise place of birth in order to proceed with the research.
TRABALKA does list in Slovak Republic's phone book.

Zlatica : Re: Trabalka
chilischew,

TRABALKA Josef arriving in 1904, 20 y. Hungarian, Slovak, Trsztina, going to PerthAmboy, NJ, had $11, was in US in 1901 & 1903, brother-in-law Andro Polacka/Polacsa
TREBALKA Jozsef manifest you might also look at. Use One step www.stevemorse.org to locate people that came from a particular village. Use your imaginatation as to the misspellings of a surname and a village.
From Usztye: TRABALKA, Apollonia, Ferencz, Johanna, Jozsef, Lajos, Peter, Yozsef (Jozsef) and Zofia.
From Usztyc: FROBOLKA (sp?)Zofia, TREBALKA Jozsef, Jozsef. From Wsztye ; from Vorecka; from Istye; from Ustye. I used one step in the surname TRABAL.
Trsztena / Trstzenna/Trstenna/Trsztyenna Arva megye, Hungary now Trstena, Orava region, Slovak Republic
You will find Trsztena on http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910
Most of the TRABALKAs and TREBALKAs were from Usztye (Usztya/Ustya/Ustie nad Oravou), which is a village up the road from Trsztena and now part of Trstena. No phone listing in Trstena or Ustie but in Vavrecka (Vavrecska) which is West of Ustie.

chilischew: Toszlena maybe Tuzina
On the manifest it said his last residence was toszlena, In present ay SLoavakia there is a tuzina. They might be the same place but I'm not sure. I am also wondering if he may have changed some of his information when he came over due to the political climate fo the time. He listed his birth place as Hungary, but his nationality as Slovack.

Zlatica : Re: anyone
Chilischew

Wonderful thing the EI foundation did by puting the manifest on web,but keep in mind that spelling errors were made at the port of departure and then again by volunteers who transcribed the manifests.
Did you not read my two posts to you? I am sure you know that up to 1918 the records would say Austria or Hungary. In that empire about 12 different languages spoken.
I was not notified about your query but decided to reply since I was the first one to answer. You will not find a Toszlena as it never existed being that it was transcribed incorrectly.
