Project Background:
Your Group Administrator-George Valko has enjoyed more than 10 years gathering genealogy data and published two VALKO family history books. Many USA Valko families are already in George’s database. The database has good VALKO data by state for IL, IN, WI, MI and some VALKO data for NY, CT, CO, OH, PA, CA, NE and Ontario. WALKO family data is in this database also. Each participant gets their results from familytreeDNA.com with access codes to their data, a certificate, and positive and negative relationship results within the VALKO family surname group. 37 or 25 marker tests are the best entry to the group. A 12 marker test is cheaper and the minimum to determine any relationship results. The more markers tested reduces the time frame to any common ancestor. NOTE- the Y-DNA tests can show common ancestors thousands of years before the adoption of surnames.

Project Goals:
Please encourage MALE VALKO - WALKOs to join the Y-DNA study. Study goals are--
1- to determine whether the VALKOs of western Slovakia [mostly Lutherans] are related.
2- to determine if the Valkos of eastern Slovakia [mostly Roman and Orthodox Catholics] are related to the VALKOs of western Slovakia.
3- to determine if the Hungarian VALKOs [most found near Budapest] are related to the VALKOs of Slovakia
4- to determine a possible geographical source for the VALKO surname [surname stem?].
5- to determine if Volkov, Volkoff, Valkoun & Valkonen people are related to VALKO, WALKO & VALYKO

Project News:
06 August 2004—
EARLY RESULTS two VALKO are related [expected result] and two Valkos match 11/12, possibly related. Other 5 testees, not related, i.e. no common ancestors within the last 5,000 years. Waiting for test results from 3 other study members.
Three testees are predicted R1a and one predicted R1b. Two testees are very possibly R1a as shown by their REO matches. One testee is haplogroup I, i.e. possible Viking origin. SECOND RESULTS, two testees, related via a 'good' paper trail, are proven related; i.e. 12/12 matches. THIRD results, early August, two testees match 11/12. Results from markers 13-25 due soon from second testee. Markers 13-25 already posted for other, 11/12 matching, testee. FOURTH results, surprise- first VALKO/Hungary tests as Haplogroup I. Haplogroup I is possible Viking origin. VALKOs from Slovakia and Hungary would be expected from east Eurasia, Haplogroup R1a. Next test results expected late August - results expected about eight weeks after return of kit.
We have now one VALKO member with Hungarian ancestors and test results = Haplogroup I.
Of the seven VALKOs with Slovak ancestors, 3 are predictive R1a, two have R1a REO matches and one tests R1b.
The best studies have the most members and thus the most data for comparison.
We need more test volunteers. Please inquire.

Project Results:
Valko yDNA study has 11 members mid July 04 and additional interested inquiries from potential participants. Results posted from 8 testees as of 5Aug04. Project started 01March2004. As of mid-July more than 1,100 announcement postcards mailed to announce the start of the project. More than 400 cards were mailed to Europe and Australia, mostly Slovakia and Hungary. Early responses expressing interest are mainly questions about the test and questions about specific families. I will continue to follow up with those expressing interest and to 'targeted possible family members' in the USA and Europe. Some surprises.
