Thanks.
I am trying to find some records a little older. My Greatgrand mother was in US in the late 1800's. Ellis records are all 1900's.

Did you locate their place of birth?
Family went to family in those old days so it is possible that some ZAJERs and NORKUS arriving thru Ellis Island could be related to your ancestors. What language did they speak?

Well,
What is funny is that my grandfather, Sylvester Norkus' son
used to tell my mother that her ancestors were Austrian-Hungarian...However the name Norkus appears Lithuanian. On a census in the 1800's my great grandmother and great grandfather listed themselves as from Hungary and the children listed their parents as Russian! I suppose if Russia held the territory the kids might call it that.

The relatives don't remember any language or customs handed down.

A map of Austria-Hungary:
http://users.erols.com/mwhite28/austhung.htm Yes, Lithuania's phone book is listing NORKUS. This site says that the surname ZAJER shows up in School report in Nagykanizsa, Zala megye, Hungary.
In 1990 census of names there were 50 ZAJERs and 33 NORKUS in Poland.
The historical region Galicia, Austria was divided up between Poland and Ukraine. Here is a site with the boundary map of Poland: www.polishroots.com/genpoland/changes.htm
You will need to locate the place of birth. Anything in the church records? Were your ancestors married in "new land"? Have you posted on Ancestry and Genforum?

Thank you Nagy.
Veronica Zajer was my Great-Grandmother. We were told that she might be from Hungary, but could not confirm it. I could never find the name in any lists of origin. So, is Zajer a Hungarian name?

Veronica Zajer Norkus
b.May-1860 d. Feb.1, 1904 naturalized American 1884

Are you in the USA or Hungary? I will look up these towns and see them on the map. What is the one in parenthesis for? Do your relatives know of old relatives who left Hungary in 1880's? Are your relatives Catholic? I am happy you found my post! You can contact me direct at jilann -k-u-k-a-c- hotmail -p-o-n-t- com

Nagy Bela: Re: Zajer 1800's
Zajer isn't an original Hungarian name my mother mentioned me it is a Germanian name. My great-great grandfather came from Germany to Hungary. My great-great grandfather didn't speak Hungarian.

I live in Budapest Hungary.
About 1950 Somogyszentmiklós annexed to Nagykanizsa. Nowadays Somogyszentmiklós is part of Nagykanizsa.

Sorry my relatives don't know who left Hungary in 1880's.

It's true my relatíves are Catholic.

Sorry my little English. :)

OK, So now we know there are and were Zajer families in Hungary. Your great-grandfather came from Germany. Does your mother know what region of Germany? That might help me. My Great Grandfather moved from Lithuania to Hungary. They think it was for religious reasons and he was Catholic. He married Veronica Zajer, but I don't know if it was there or in America. No one can find any information on Zajer family. I am trying.

Thanks for all your help!

dozza: Re: Zajer 1800's
Hi Jil-An, I have just stumbled across this site by accident having just typed my surname into Google. I am a Zajer living in England. One of only two in this country. My father Edmund Zajer was Polish, born in Warsaw and emigrated to the US in the 1960's. As far as our family history goes back we have the story that his family was originally from the Strasboug area which depending on what time in history you are looking at was either French or German. The original spelling I believe was Saehr. It was misspelt in Poland where 2 Saehr brothers ended up after returning from the Napoleonic wars preferring to stay in Poland where the settled down got married and had families. The spelling mistake was made when a birth was recorded wrongly and the name was spelt phonetically by a Pole.

Zajer itself is not a Polish name but there are quite a few still there. We've always considered it a quite rare name and that somehow we are related to the Zajers dotted around the world. I was recently contacted by some Zajers in Australia who also have a Polish connection.

Don't know if this will be any use to you in your search.
Regards
Doris Zajer

Doris,

Awesome! I really have no information except that Veronica Zajer (How do you pronounce it?)married my great-grandfather Sylvester Norkus, in 1886 and lived in Brooklyn, NY. Veronica was born May-1860 died. Feb.1, 1904 Hungarian ?
She was naturalized in 1884.

My grandfather told my mother that Veronica was Austrian Hungarian. Based on all the occupations in Europe who knows?

So, were you raised in America? Ask your Dad if he has any early records. Anyone have a child Veronica??? Can you send me your email? I am at Jilann -k-u-k-a-c- hotmail.com -p-o-n-t- It would be fun to compare notes.

Did you see the picture someone posted above?

A Zájer-rokonok Zala megyében éltek/élnek.

Hello,
Thank you again for the information! Can you translate the message above and your answer for me please!

This is great information. My great-grandmother was Veronika Zajer, born in May of 1860, Naturalized USA 1884 and died during childbirth Feb 1 1904. She lists Hungary on the census. She married Syvestre Norkus and lived in Brooklyn New York.

Any Veronika Zajers in anyones background?

Wow. Great to hear from you. Can you translate the messages above yours in the forum? One is from your cousin but I don't know what it says. All I know is my great-grandmother was Veronica Zajer and her husband was Sylvestre Norkus. I am probably the age of your parents. Your cousin put Istvan's picture here. I put Veronica's in. Does anyone remember a Veronica in your history?

Attila Zajer: Re: ZAJERs
Dear Jil-Ann,

My cousin, Béla was just discussing where Zájers could possibly live in Hungary. He mentions his mother and my father (sis&bro) and their additional two sisters.
He mentions my grandfather (whom I never seen but was told that he saw me after my birth but then soon passed). My grandfather - István Zájer was born in 1901 in Nagykanizsa-Miklósfa and lived in Murakereksztur and then at the late years of his life in Budapest.
Also tells about where relatives can live: in county Zala (western part of Hungary).
As before him Zsolt (?) mentioned a name: Anikó, Béla asked for some more information to get clear who he was talking about. He did taht cause my sister, Anikó Zájer lives in Budapest and happy mother of soon three children.

I'll ask about Veronika in the history but I'M affraid we would not be bale to remember that much. But who knows...

I'll check back with more information as I can! ;)

Take care,
Ati
